Всем спасибо за помощь и советы!
Проблема была в ошибках ФС: логи остались дома, но суть в том, что нужно
было прогнать fsck.ext3.
Оно и понятно: ФС не проверялась года 2-3, с момента покупки ноутбука.
Да и перезагружался он раз в месяц (в зависимости от выпуска ядер).
Полагаю, стОит настроить периодическую проверку корневой ФС при старте
ОС. Или это уже есть, но незаметно?
