После обновления отвалились драйвера nvidia
Из Xorg.0.log:

Карта - GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x
Драйвера - nvidia_glx_96.43.07-96.43.07-alt39
Ядро - 2.6.25-std-def-alt7
Для реанимации системы воспользовался советом "nv и swrast".
