Когда-то (около года назад) у меня была похожая проблема. При
проигрывании через mplayer на моей видеокарте графическая подсистема
висла. Но сама машина работала. Если заходил по ssh, то мог сделать
service dm stop; rmmod nvidia; service dm start и всё путём. При чём
другим плеером играло нормально даже через xv. Если пытался просто
сделать service dm restat, то X-сервер перезапускался, но через
несколько секунд система висла намертво, не помогало даже ALT+SysRq+B,
только жёсткий Reset. Видео было GF4 MX440. Система - ALC3.0. Перешёл на
ALD4.0 - глюк пропал.
У вас, случаем, не Nvidia? Может, драйвер nvidia что-то портит?
