залезь в расширения thunderbird и удали русский язык
потом перезапусти thunderbird

гм. я не уверен, что это универсальный способ.
мне даже показалось, что это из-за той истории, когда 1.5.0.х какая-то по какой-то причине
игнорировала thunderbird-ru и thunderbird-switch-locale
(или как там они называются...)
В итоге я поставил ru.xpi и русский появился
А потом, при обновлении до 2.0 видимо этот ru.xpi от 1.5.0.х и мешал нормальному восприятию
громптицей своего thunderbird-ru. Именно поэтому удаляя в расширениях thunderbird русский язык
мы именно удаляем тот ru.xpi, после чего thunderbird уже нормально воспринимает свой thunderbird-ru
