кажется предыдущее мое письмо ушло нечитабельным :(

проблема скорее всего не в  xorg-x11-drv-intel, или, во всяком случае, 
не только в нем...
у меня i945G -- симптомы похожие. только система не виснет совсем, а 
просто гаснет монитор
(говорит: out of sync). помогает, правда, только ребут (вслепую набираю)
пробовал в xorg.conf указать Option "DisplayInfo" "FALSE" и Option 
"MonitorLayout" "CRT" легче стало только тем, что после
вылета иксов возвращается текстовый режим...
как здесь уже писали, откатился на связку:

все опять работает

зря вас смутили строчки в моем конфиге про Composite и проч... это я 
берил пускал,
а все проблемы с новыми иксами были еще до этого...

сейчас даже пробовать не буду -- не поможет (уже давно пытался починить 
проблему указанием VertRefresh 60 -- не помогло)

А что по моему случаю ? "опять i810 ( на Intel 82945G) взорвался , похоже"

поставил этот драйвер и обновил xorg'и до 902-alt2 : log3 X'ы не 
стартанули, но текстовый режим я получил
на сцене те же + убрал из xorg.conf Option "MonitorLayout" "CRT" : log4 
X'ы не стартанули, монитор 'out of range', reboot
вернул назад xorg'и 901-alt1 (драйвер 'попытка 2' оставил) :  log5  все 
нормально.

попробуй ftp://ftp.altlinux.ru/pub/people/shrek/Xorg-7.2/intel_drv.so
его надо положить в /usr/lib/X11/modules/drivers и в xorg.conf поменять 
Driver "i810" на "intel"

это радует. надо попробовать 1.6.5, который идет вместе с 7.2rc2
