Боюсь показаться занудой. Но у меня с апреля работает 1.11 и с поддержкой
передачи UNICODE. В 1.11 достаточно багов пришлось вычищать.
А что такое собранная в мае версия 1.10 - мне не очень понятно.
Но это уже не по теме моего вопроса. Вопрос был - чем помешал gcc2.96?
Есть много софта, заточенного под него. Попробуйте откомпилировать старые
ядра и модули для них чем-нибудь кроме gcc2.96.
