Как RPM получает информацию о текущей платформе? Я хочу приучить его
распознавать платформы i786 (pIV), athlon, k8 (opteron в 32-х битном
режиме). Куда копать?

Судя по комментариям в /usr/lib/rpm/rpmrc из того что возвращает функция
uname().
