а конкретно - compact-20031030 (с ним я долго возился на новой машинке)??
если да, то обновить ядро оччень не помешает, хотя бы до alt8.. ну и соответствующие дрова-модули под видео..
(ну и железо, как и советуют, конечно стоит проверить)
