Можно ли текущие XFreee из Сизифа ставить на Мастера? Или потянет 
обновление половины системы?

Думаю, можно. Поставил прямо на Master из коробки, закачали порядка 30M 
из сизифа

Можно, но приготовтесь к тому, что если у вас Radeon 7500, то про 
OpenGL можно забыть :(

У меня не Radeon и новые Х-ы мне понравились. Хотя не понятно зачем 
сломали украинскую раскладку. Но это подправим.
А так, даже запускаются быстрее... :)

Почему? У нас Radeon 8500 завёлся, в Q3 fps приличный.

Я так понимаю, что 7500 и 8500 -- две большие
разницы. 8500 вроде поддерживается какими-то особыми
драйверами (видел в Сизифе), а 7500 -- нет.

Так Вы пробовали его запустить? Откуда категоричное заявление,
что про OpenGL можно забыть?

Поддержка 7500 была ещё раньше 8500, а работа последнего
проверена на практике. Есть мало оснований полагать, что
поддержку 7500 выкинули или сломали.

Ещё бы не пробовать! До 4.3 всё работало как часики!
С переходом на 4.3 всё перестало работать. Я перепробовал
всё, что мог перепробовать.

Так это мало. Так и у меня работает
через radeon_gatos.

А вообще, покажитеб пожалуйста, ваш конфиг.

Здесь нет абсолютно никакой информации для того, чтобы можно было
чем-то помочь.

Если нужен результат, опишите симптомы - ошибки дословно, версии
и сборки пакетов, используемый драйвер.

Попробуйте родной драйвер из XFree: ati или radeon.

1) С драйвером radeon_gatos и раньше DRI не работал (ругался на
несоответствие версий ядерного модуля и драйвера). По крайней мере с
теми версиями X и ядра, которые были в Master 2.0 и 2.2.

2) Где XFree86.0.log ?

3) Ядро определённо старое - вероятно, его тоже нужно брать из Сизифа.

Так я раньше его и не пробовал. Перешёл на него лишь потому, что 
программы хотя бы ошибку не выдают.

А разве оно не должно было обновиться при очередном dist-upgrade? 
Кстати, не опасно ли обновлять ядро? А то тут в рассылке что-то 
много нареканий на новые ядра... Если что-то не пойдёт, как 
потом обратно откатиться?

Нет, не должно.

Ядра не обновляются, apt их доустанавливает к имеющимся, именно
чтобы можно было загрузиться со старым ядром.

Скорее всего, нужно поставить ядро
kernel-image-2.4.21pre5-std-up

drm-модуль к нему (учите apt-cache search)

и заменить в конфиге XF86Config-4
Load "dri"
на
Load "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a"

Драйвер должен "ati" (или "radeon").

После этого загрузитесь в X и покажите вывод
$ glxinfo |grep direct
