Большое спасибо за советы, модули ata_piix, floppy явно включил в /etc/initrd.mk - то же самое: udev орёт unable to mount root fs. Модули загружены.
В trace файлах я не вижу ничего особо подозрительного.
Машинка - Dell Inspiron 8600 - нечто вроде http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/dell-inspiron-8600-for/4507-3121_7-30521464.html
Только монитор 1920хчто-то и винт 40 гигов.
