Дело действительно было в ACPI: ОС устанавливалась в безопасном
режиме (так как иначе после загрузки установщика экран превращается в
полосатое черти-что), и поэтому (что для меня было неожиданно) в
командную строку ядра прокрались noapic и acpi=off. Убрал -- и модуль
nouveau снова может грузиться.
То есть, после установки в безопасном режиме получаем систему с
неработающими иксами. Печаль...
