Был простенький комп athlon 700 mhz, на нем неспеша крутился AltLinux с
последним бранчем. Комп обновил до athlon 64, как теперь перевести систему?

Включить в розетку и нажать кнопку "Пуск"? Что ещё "переводить " нужно?

Наверное, так же , как и с i386 на PowerPC: проинсталлировать и скопировать
конфиги.
