Я бе не спрашивал, если бы не видел следующее. Берем std-smp:

This package contains the Linux kernel that is used to boot and run
 your system.

Most hardware drivers for this kernel are built as modules. Some of
these drivers are built separately from the kernel; they are available
 in separate packages (kernel-modules-*-std-smp).

The "std" variant of kernel packages is a generic 2.6.x kernel which
should support wide range of hardware, but does not contain patches
which are useful only for some special applications (and may have
undesirable side effects in other cases). This is the default 2.6.x
kernel variant for ALT Linux distributions.

Теперь берем std-def:

This package contains the Linux kernel that is used to boot and run

Most hardware drivers for this kernel are built as modules. Some of
these drivers are built separately from the kernel; they are available
 in separate packages (kernel-modules-*-std-def).

Отличий не вижу, соответственно не могу понять, в чем разница между std-smp и
std-def. В описании к ice-wks все то же самое, кроме фразы:

The "ice-wks" variant of kernel packages is a generic 2.6.x kernel which
should support most of desktop hardware and contains patches which
reduce overall kernel latency and improve I/O performance.

Как интерпретировать "reduce overall latency" или "improve I/O performance|?
Соответственно, и спрашиваю, может где-то есть какое-то более детальное
описание.
