Итак, после последнего обновления ядра (а может fglrx, а может еще чего)
CD-ROM на моей машине отвалился окончательно, при втыкании любого диска вся
IDE подсистема встает раком и так замирает до холодной перезагрузки. Лог
прилагается.

Если привод старый, и не умеет UDMA, а умеет только PIO, то не надо "загонять"
его hdparm-ом в этот режим. Проверьте /etc/sysconfig/hard* и скрипты.

Ну я бы не назвал Plextor 760A старым. Пару лет ему стукнуло, но уж не такой
старичок, чтобы не поддерживать UDMA. Да и работал он у меня все эти два года
без нареканий. Скрипты не менялись.

Как правило, 100% людей, обращающихся в техподдержку, говорит, что "у меня
ничего не менялось". :) Но опыт показывает, что это не так...
В данном случае Вы сами пишите, что это произошло "после последнего обновления
ядра (а может fglrx, а может еще чего) ". И пусть не скрипт, пусть ядро - но
что-то изменилось.
Посмотрите - что пишется про IDE/ATA в dmesg при загрузке (не только о hdc).
