С того, что я видел, что у него внутри. Загляните ради интереса
в свежесобраный rmagick, найдёте много интересного ;-)

так делаю. Любую софтину можно отучить хотеть rubygems и
заставить пользоваться нормально упакованными модулями.

Для манипуляций с пакетами гораздо корректнее пользоваться
штатным дистрибутивным пакетным менеджером.
