Похоже, версия драйверов просто слишком старая и несовместима с 2.6.18.
Причём в качестве более новых версий драйвера там уже предлагается
forcedeth.

Странно - примерно на таком же железе, правда, от MSI, forcedeth вроде бы
работает нормально. Опишите ситуацию подробнее - что появляется в dmesg
при загрузке модуля и попытке использования сети. На всякий случай ещё
можно попробовать загрузку с pci=noacpi или acpi=off (хотя столь вопиющие
ошибки в BIOS в последнее время всё-таки встречаются реже, чем раньше).
