на i586 оно таки ставится (еще раз перепроверил, thresh@ подтвердил), и
даже ничего не падает при первом старте. Ну а обои это все-таки не
мантейнеру гнома.

да, наверное, лучше дать ему x86-64 машину :)) Но все равно, непорядочек.
