можно ещё явно режим указать. У меня, например, так:
ENABLE=yes
MODULE=radeonfb
TTYS='1 2 3 4 5 6 12'
MODE="-depth 32 1280x1024-75"

vesafb без перезагрузки никак не отменишь :(
