ssmtp это не MTA, а затычка для /usr/lib/sendmail, т.е. заниматься
приемкой почты он не обязан. Думаю, вам следует просто внимательно
прочитать description пакета и его man страницу. /bin/mail при отправке
вызывает /usr/lib/sendmail, если там стоит ссылка на настроенный ssmtp, то
"все идет" через него. Если на nullmailer нужно еще и принимать почту, то
это уже не null, а полноценный MTA :)
