После сегодняшнего dist-upgrade меню на английском, хотя
thunderbird-ru и thunderbird-switch-locales -- стоят и
соответствуют версии thunderbird.

Посмотрите в каталоги
/usr/lib/thunderbird-1.5/extensions
и /usr/share/thunderbird-1.5/extensions
Создайте симлинки в /usr/lib/thunderbird-1.5/extensions
на недостающие каталоги из /usr/share/thunderbird-1.5/extensions
Перезапустите thunderbird и все у вас получится ...
Но это временное решение...
Если можете, подождите исправления ошибок...
Они уже известны и очень горяче обсуждены тут :)
Я бы даже сказал - излишне горяче ...
