Чтобы раздавать события, которые он получает из /proc/acpi/event,
более чем одному клиенту (как уже было замечено, ядро позволяет
использовать /proc/acpi/event только одному процессу одновременно).

Если только вместо него будет запускаться, например, hald-addon-acpi,
а все прочие программы, которым нужно получать события ACPI, будут
цепляться к нему (например, через dbus).
Впрочем, возможен и другой вариант - ядро может начать выдавать
события ACPI не через /proc/acpi/event, а с использованием какого-то
другого механизма (в частности, уже есть поползновения отправить все
события button/* куда-нибудь в /dev/input/event*; что-то могут пустить
и через netlink).
