Посмотрите /var/log/syslog/messages
Там может быть показано, как определился диск.
Еще попробуйте fdisk -l /dev/hde - она покажет, есть ли вообще определенный
системой диск hde.
Еще посмотрите в /dev : ls /dev/hd* - с ядром 2.6 это тоже помогает
