Эта штука *зверски* жмёт текстовые файлы.
$ du -hs dump.old
350M dump.old
$ gzip -9 <dump.old >dump.gz
$ du -hs dump.gz
31M dump.gz
$ bzip2 <dump.old >dump.bz2
$ du -hs dump.bz2
21M dump.bz2
$ ppmd e -s -o16 -m256 dump.old
$ du -hs dump.pmd
14M dump.pmd
$
Жмёт быстро, примерно как gzip. Единственный критический ресурс --
оперативная память (опция -m256 означает "откусить 256 метров памяти").
Но памяти нужно не больше, чем размер сжимаемого файла.
Собственно, благодаря этой штуке я недавно скачал себе этот файл, на
очень средненьком дайлапе, почти что с комфортом. Чего, как говорится,
и вам желаю, то есть не приведи Господь.
