Какая версия sim? Я закачал самую новую с sisyphus - никаких проблем. Старую с
ALT 2.4 не пробовал. У kopete из kde 3.4.1 практически нет проблем с
кодировками. У нового gaim, кстати, их нет вообще.
В любом случае, альтернативы есть. Кстати, ты запускал sim или sim-qt?
Правда, у меня athlon и agp'шная видяха.
