Было тоже самое. Кардинально я решил так. Перенес все настройки в секретное место, запустил гном с новыми чистыми настройками, добавил аплетики и т.д. Все заработало нормально.

У меня в каждой менюхе добавился внизу разделитель (это оно и есть "."?) Наверное проблема с Education тоже в этом, там есть точка (разделитель).
