Молча не бывает. А бывает, что он не может прибиндиться к порту. Проверьте,
что sshd в основной системе биндится не к 0.0.0.0:22 (netstat -nlp --inet).
Исправить можно или через chbind, или через конфиг sshd.

у меня дома 0.0.0.0 стоит... и работает ведь :(
проверьте настройки vserver'а

скорее через второе...
еще может понадобится поменять X11UseLocalhost на "no" (из личного
тяжелого опыта :( ) для нормальной работы X приложений
