Спасибо. Правда, конфиг не помог, но после его безрезультатной замены
начал копать дальше. Установка 3.2.2 тоже не помогла. Помогло удаление
каталога ~/.kde/share/apps/konsole. Очевидно, там было что-то мешающее.
Жаль, уже не узнать, что именно.

А тут дело оказалось совсем просто. Gkrellm, на который наваливались
сверху новооткрытые окна, имел в конфигурации опцию "размещаться на
заднем плане". Очевидно, в таком режиме алгоритм размещения окон его
просто не учитывает. А другие окна я, когда проверял, перед открытием
новых передвигал вправо-вниз (автоматически, по привычке), вот оно так
и получалось. Но, кстати, что-то всё-таки в этом отношении в KDE
изменилось. Ведь настройки Gkrellm'а я не менял уже довольно много
времени (не меньше полугода), собственно, поэтому и не пришло в голову,
что в нём что-то не так.
