Долгое обсуждение с майнтейнером gnomemeeting проблемы, как 
можно использовать разного рода мультимедийные плейеры, имея в 
трее ожидающий вызова гномемеетинг, и не бояться, что при 
ответе на вызов этот гномемиитинг вам скажет /dev/dsp busy (и, 
соответственно, в видеоконференции не будет звука), закончились 
тем, что Сандрас отказался встраивать в свой продукт 
возможности для принудительной приостановки других аудио- и 
видеоприложений при ответе на вызов; вместо этого он предлагает 
создавать virtual DMIX ALSA soundcard - хотя сам же и 
признается, что никогда с ней не работал.  Также он предлагает 
замыкать artsd (и, надо думать, esd в гноме) на эту карту.

Очевидно также, в этой связи, что будет полезным устанавливать 
по умолчанию время засыпания artsd не в 60 секунд, как сейчас, 
а максимум в 1-2 секунды, может даже в 0.

That won't happen. Other maintainers would think I'm crazy to auto-kill
other programs. That doesn't make sense.

It will be possible the day where GNOME and KDE will both adopt a good
sound daemon. Currently, the only possibility is to create a virtual
DMIX ALSA soundcard (check their doc, I never tried), and to use that
virtual soundcard as output for all programs. That will transparently
work with all applications!

You can tell to artsd to bind to the virtual ALSA soundcard.

There is an option in artsd to make it release the dsp soundcard when it
is not used.
