Захотел я значит обновить apt:
rpm --test -Uhv apt-0.5.5cnc4.1-alt7.i586.rpm
apt-utils-0.5.5cnc4.1-alt7.i586.rpm libapt-0.5.5cnc4.1-alt7.i586.rpm
librpm-4.0.4-alt26.i586.rpm rpm-4.0.4-alt26.i586.rpm error: failed

Ответ не верный.
Скачать надо всё, что работает с новыми альтернативами. (А это много)
Намного проще было задать этот вопрос apt'у. Он бы ответил очень точно.

Для gcc и Co - ответ верный. update-alternatives это старые
альтернативы, котторые были вынесены из rpm в отдельный пакет.
Новый альтернативы - alternatives-update.
