Как выяснилось. vim-X11-gtk2 не понимает стандартной X-нотации для шрифтов
(XLFD). У меня в ~/.gvimrc сейчас такое:
set guifont=Andale\ Mono\ 11
Выглядит, на мой взгляд, вполне прилично.
