в ответ тишина.
Постфикс работает (иначе вы бы не читали это письмо :-)

Похоже status не работает 
# service postfix       
Usage: postfix 
{start|stop|adjust|check|flush|reload|restart|condstop|condrestart|condreload|status}


# postfix reload
postfix/postfix-script: refreshing the Postfix mail system

# postfix restart
postfix/postfix-script: fatal: usage: postfix start (or stop, reload, abort, 
flush, or check)

Нет, тут другая история - /usr/lib/postfix/master не находится в
стандартном $PATH; apply this patch:

А как, кстати, насчет обновления версии?
сейчас стоит 
postfix-1.1.12-alt2

выходит новая, делаю apt-get install postfix ? 

а что он потянет за собой? а какие изменения конфигов потребует?

Будет, скорее всего, postfix-2.0.x

Лучше dist-upgrade.
