У меня аналогичный аппарат, но внутренний.
Пилит диски так, что аж искры летят :)
Что касаемо проблемы USB, то ещё года два назад я читал на ixbt.com
об аналогичной проблеме, правда под Windows. Это было, если мне не
изменяет память, из-за ограничения пропускной способности
шины USB1.1 (max=1,5 MB/s).
