У обычного SVGA-монитора еще должны быть отдельные сигналы
вертикальной и горизонтальной синхронизации. Можно предположить, что
этому надо Sync On Green.
Ни в драйвере cirrus для XFree86, ни в clgenfb я не нашел управления
типом синхронизации - только переключение полярности (+hsync/-hsync,
+vsync/-vsync).
grep по драйверам XFree86-4.2.0-alt4 дал следующее: этот вариант
синхронизации поддерживается в mga, tga, i128, chips.

/dev/fb0 появится либо после modprobe clgenfb (причем там, скорее
всего, немедленно возникнет та же проблема), либо после загрузки с
параметром vga=XXX (значения см. в документации ядра -
Documentation/fb/vesafb.txt; в стандартные ядра от ALT уже
вкомпилирован vesafb - именно он, кстати, используется в инсталяторе).
Есть еще драйвер vesa для XFree86 4.x - никогда не пробовал.
