Мне тоже казалось, что я действую правильно. Но возникла
аналогичная ситуация. Сергей Турчин посоветовал мне сделать
полный apt-get dist-upgrade (а не выборочный, как мы с Вами
делаем). В итоге, я сейчас в KDE, но так и не знаю, каких
зависимостей не хватало.
