а вы не стесняйтесь спросить пояснений.

сравните последнюю колонку с остальными.
Это _только о свободных_ драйверах.

у меня 1680*1050 и свободный radeon на r700 (последнее из сизифа).
сейчас проделал такой эксперимент:
kde4.4, эффекты включены. открыл браузер на полный экран, загрузил сайт.
взял мышкой скроллер и начал быстро дергать им вверх-вниз.
текст на сайте не тормозит вообще, дергается так что в глазах расплывается.
отключил эффекты рабстола в kde, сделал то же самое.
ничего не изменилось - все так же быстро дергается.
то есть 2d производительность отличная.
вот еще данные (можете попробовать и сравнить)
