Впрочем, не обязан присутствовать, если запросов на запись еще не
поступало.
Общий рецепт для всех GNOME3 приложений, чтоб работали без gnome-shell:
1. Установить dconf, если вдруг его не оказалось в зависимостях, как у
evince.
2. установить gnome-icon-theme.
3. Прописать в .config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini как минимум

Прочие, могущие кому-то быть полезными настройки для GTK3, можно
посмотреть тут: https://developer.gnome.org/gtk3/3.8/GtkSettings.html
Для XFCE и E17 пункт 3 не требуется.
ICEWM, fluxbox не умеют совсем, а KDE не умеет правильно устанавливать
тему иконок для GTK3 приложений.
