Подобные манипуляции можно производить без перезагрузки Xserver, с
помощью команды xset

хм. Не вижу ничего примечательного.
Похоже, проблема локальная. Хотите зафиксировать в багзилле?
В любом случае, я рад, что проблема решена, хотя бы "объездом". В своё
время я тоже объезжал подобный глюк командой "xset +fp
/usr/share/fonts/bitmap/univga". Но это было давно (ещё до появления
catalogue:/etc/X11/fontpath.d)
