Окей. поскольку у меня работает, попытаюсь помочь.
1. С самых базовых вещей. Покажите содержимое /etc/X11/fontpath.d . Там
должна быть ссылка:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 36 2009-10-13 10:22
bitmap-misc:unscaled:pri=20 -> ../../../usr/share/fonts/bitmap/misc
2. xlsfonts | egrep ^-misc-fixed должен показать много доступных
шрифтов.
3. Поскольку проблема глобальная (x*, gvim, и т.п.), то, думаю,
проверять настройки отдельных приложений нет смысла.
Если в п.2 шрифтов fixed нет,
2а. надо проверить, какие шрифты цепляет Xserver:
grep -1 'FontPath set to' /var/log/Xorg.0.log
