Проблема осталась, виснет на compiz, через некоторое время использования
и на xscreensaver.

Не помогло - эффект тот же. Зато заметил вот что: случайно забыл
выгрузить модуль fglrx (ядро) и все загрузилось, до момента старта
compiz-a а дальше ступор системы.
