Да. Ну, потому что не было предусмотрено такого синтаксиса step*.

Согласен. :-) pipe был сохранён для совместимости, а так вообще идея 
была сразу переименовать в step, так что это не потеря, а злой умысел, 
но и правда, выглядит странно. ))
