Да. Тема должна быть определена в /etc/plymouth/plymouth.conf. Тогда
plymouth-set-default-theme вернёт имя темы.
Проблема была в том, что скрипт настройки plymouth запускался после
скрипта сборки initrd, и нужно было всего лишь изменить порядок.
