Вот смотрите (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/maintain):
1 : to keep in an existing state (as of repair, efficiency, or validity) :
preserve from failure or decline (поддерживать в текущем состоянии)
2 : to sustain against opposition or danger : uphold and defend (защищать и
оберегать)
3 : to continue or persevere in (справляться, держаться)
4 : to support or provide for (поддерживать или обеспечивать)
5 : to affirm in or as if in argument (продолжать или настаивать)
Ни одного значения "руководить, главенствовать" нет. Так что мейнтейнер - не
руководитель всё-таки, а сопровождающий, поддерживающий.
