Мастер 2.4+updates.
В ноутбуке установлена гигабитная сетевая Realtek 8169/8110.
Подключал в концентратор на 100Мб.
Модуль r8169.
mii-tool пишет, что устройство eth0 не поддерживается.
При скачивании с локального ftp ноутбук полностью вешается.
Успевает скачать ~50Мб.

Попробуйте воспользоваться утилитой ethtool и дайте вывод lspci.
