Вот причина - одновременно два (конфликтующих) ядерных модуля, alsa и
oss, для работы с одной железкой.
Лекарство (например, для ядра std26-up):
# apt-get remove kernel-modules-oss-std26-up
P.S. Если это не ноутбук (похоже, что так) - купите нормальную звуковую
карту вместо intel8x0-совместимого барахла, см.

Поколение "P" сейчас вовсю апгрейдит "старые" YMF 7x4 и SB Live!/Audigy
- так что шансы купить честные звуковые карты, пока не поздно, ещё есть.
