Кажется нашел решение, меня устраивающее.
На всякий случай опишу - может кому-то понадобится.
Тот драйвер, который предлагается Epson, требует старые версии
libssl, libtiff и др.
Исходников пакета я не нашел - так, что дело дохлое...
Я настроил одно из решений из этой статьи:

А именно:

Это наверное справедливо для всех 24-игольчатых ESCP-принтеров.
Два замечания:
1. Правильная передача размеров работает только при разрешении
180 dpi
2. CUPS из ALC 3.0 предлагает на выбор foomatic/gimprint фильтры
(если эти пакеты установлены, конечно).
Эти фильтры искажают вывод принтера.
Поэтому нужно подставить ТОЛЬКО фильтр epson24.ppd, например
воспользовавшись кнопкой "Прочие" менеджера печати KDE.
