Что-то вы слишком усложняете, всё намного проще:
$ grep DisplaySize /etc/X11/xorg.conf
DisplaySize 321 241
Измерено банальной линейкой.
А мнение о непригодности 1280x1024 на 17" - оно либо 1) от
неработающего DDC (как в моём случае из-за KVM свитча); либо 2) от
впечатлений, полученных при работе в Microsoft(r) Windows(tm) (в
разработке которой, видимо, последний человек, кто понимал физический
смысл DPI, уже давно не участвует).
