Могу порекомендовать оптимизированный(с mmx) ffmpeg -
на Athlon1600 DV->DVD ~30 fps.
И upgrade не понадобится.:)
К тому же он умеет выплевывать в pipe, а dvdauthor из него глотать.
Так что даже промежуточные mpeg'и делать не надо.
P.S.: Правда проверял лишь на .avi сделанном по win.:(
Но это был имеено dv video/pcm 2ch audio.
