Известные грабли.
Для начала...
В файле
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
должна быть строчка
blacklist ath5k
запрещающая загрузку ath5k крнфликтующего с ath_pci.
Для установки ad-hoc
> # iwconfig ath0 mode ad-hoc

#sudo modinfo ath_pci | grep autocreate
Соотв. в
/etc/modprobe.d/options
добавить
options ath_pci autocreate=adhoc
У меня иначе не получалось (с приведенным выше результатом).
