Всем спасибо за советы.
Со 120 и 160 Гб дисками проблем с загрузкой линукса и доступностью
всего диска из-под линукса не возникло. /boot вместе с / находится
в разделе /dev/hda1, занимающем 8 или 12 Гб в начале диска.
Загрузчик -- grub, установленный в MBR.
