Откуда? Для какого именно ядра? (и с какого перепугу 2.6, если
штатное 2.4 замечательно работает?)

Значит, несоответствующий.
Поищите "slmodem" на search.altlinux.ru, www.atmsk.ru и
подпишитесь на hardware@, если проблему решить при помощи этих
ресурсов не выйдет.
